All About the Cub Scout Uniform

First: Cub Scout Uniforms are NOT mandatory.

Now, having said that, your son SHOULD have a uniform. Wearing the uniform is a source of pride for the boys, and it provides a sense of belonging. Wearing and taking care of the uniform encourages the boys to be on their best "scouting" behavior, it identifies them as youth who are making the right decisions, and it clearly shows they are proud to be a scout. Wearing a uniform shows that the Scout or Scouter supports the purposes and methods of Scouting. Read more about the purposes and methods of Scouting, here. Now having said all that, no, uniforms are not mandatory. If you don't want one, or can't get one, you and your son will always be welcome in our pack.

The Cub Scout Blue Unform

The Basic Blue Uniform consists of the following items:
  1. Shirt.   Blue long or short sleeve cotton shirt.
  2. Belt w/ Scout Buckle.   Belt never changes, new buckles are optional.
  3. Neckerchief.   Neck scarf w/ Slide. Scarf changes each year, slide changes w/ Webelos.
  4. Scout Handbook.   Changes each year, Webelos I and II use the same book.
Additonal Items include:
  1. Hat.   The hat really completes the uniform and boys should have one.
  2. Pants.   Scout pants look really sharp, but get outgrown quickly
  3. Socks.   BSA blue wool socks with a red stripe.
You can see the Cub Scout Unform and browse all the accesories, at the official BSA shopping site.
This is the Cub Scout Uniform Inspection Sheet from the BSA website, which shows placement of all items on the uniform.

The Webelos Tan Uniform

The Webelos Tan Uniform consists of the same items as the blue uniform. The only differences are:   the proper hand book is the Webelos book (because Wolves and Bears do not wear the tan shirt), and the scarf is a different color, as is the hat. There is a Webelos tie slide that can be worn, and a Webelos belt buckle also.

Speaking of belts, a Weblos Scout with the tan shirt can wear either the blue cub belt (which is preferred) or they can wear the olive belt with the Webelos belt buckle.

The other difference is the Wolf and Bear patches are not worn on the brown uniform.   Notice on the pictures above, the blue shirts have the diamond shaped Wolf, Bear and Bobcat patches on them. Those are not worn on the tan shirt. Another difference in badges is the webelos badge. On the blue uniform, the Webelos badge is diamond shaped and matches the Wolf and Bear badges. However, the Webelos Badge for the tan shirt is round and is a tan color.

Optional items are the same for the Webelos Tan uniform, as for the Cub Scout Blue uniform. As mentioned above, there are two belt options, although the blue cub belt is preferred. Socks for the Webelos Tan uniform are Boy Scout Green with a red stripe (not blue).
